Elk Grove Online, a long time community website started in the mid 1990’s has announced it will be shutting down on July 31 after 20 years. On a message posted on their website, the owners said, “After 20 fun-filled years, we have decided to discontinue Elk Grove Online. EGO has been a big part of our lives and we are proud of its positive impact on the community of Elk Grove. Thank you all for the good times and amazing experiences. We’ll see you on the streets of the real world. :)”
The website was started before the new age of social media with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as before the invention of the smart phone and all it’s applications that have made connecting with others much easier without the need for a computer. Elk Grove Online, or EGO as it was called, helped the Elk Grove community connect with one another. The website hosted community events, fundraisers and helped raise awareness in the community as well as keeping members informed about what was going on.
It was social media and the creation of a competing community website, Elk Grove Laguna Forums, in 2010 that slowly eroded the following of Elk Grove Online. In a topic posted on Elk Grove Laguna Forums discussing the closure of Elk Grove Online, former EGO members are welcome to join Elk Grove Laguna Forums.
