Cosumnes Oaks teacher arrested on multiple charges for having sex with a minor

A Cosumnes Oaks High School teacher has been arrested on having sex with a minor under the age of 16.  Monte Reed, 40 of Elk Grove, was being investigated earlier this year on allegations of misconduct with a student.  The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department had been investigating Reed since the allegations back in April.

Statement from the Elk Grove Unified School District

ELK GROVE, Calif. – September 29, 2017 – Last spring, an employee of Cosumnes Oaks High School was removed from the school immediately upon allegations of sexual misconduct. Any allegation of sexual misconduct is taken very seriously and when crisis situations such as these arise, the employee is immediately removed from having contact with District students pending the results of the investigation and District staff and school officials work closely with law enforcement to investigate.

Yesterday, September 28, 2017, District officials learned that the employee in question, Monte Reed, was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on multiple charges involving unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Understanding the severity of the charges, this matter is very concerning to all staff, students, parents and the District’s communities. Student safety is the District’s utmost priority. News of the arrest and the charges has been shared with the school staff, students and families.

In addition to monitoring students and staff on campus for social and emotional support, the District will provide a team of counselors who will be available on campus to work with those students and staff who wish to speak with them. This additional support will remain in place as long as it is needed. The school and District also provide support to the victim and the victim’s families to the greatest extent possible.

One act of sexual misconduct is one act too many. Thanks to students, staff and parents, this incident was brought to light. The District continues to encourage people that “If they SEE something or KNOW something, to SAY something.” The District has reviewed and evaluated its District Policies and Practices regarding hiring practices, training and reporting to ensure the District is taking all available precautions to ensure student safety and will continue to do so to prevent this type of misconduct from happening in the future. Elk Grove Unified will also continue to foster an environment where students and staff feel comfortable coming forward and reporting inappropriate conduct.

The District follows preventative measures outlined for schools that are enumerated in a U.S. Department of Education study, “Educator Sexual Misconduct: A Synthesis of Existing Literature,” a Policy and Program Studies Service published in 2004 by the Under Secretary.

Reed was arrested in Los Angeles County and brought to Sacramento on an arrest warrant.
