A march is planned for 1:30 pm today in the Old Town area of Elk Grove. The protest is in response to recent incidents in the Elk Grove area involving racial issues. The city has been dealing with the aftermath of the racist notes left on the door of a salon in Old Town owned by a black businesswoman. That led to community meetings involving the City of Elk Grove, CSD, and community members. The city heard the report on those meetings at a city council meeting last week. Last month there was a video on social media that went viral involved two local high school students making racist comments. That video has led the Elk Grove School District to hold a community meeting tomorrow night.
The march planned for today came about as a result of a post on Facebook by the Dream Girls salon shop owner, Sharie Wilson, alleging harassment by local business owners in the Old Town area. Elk Grove Laguna News reached out to Wilson and the other two shop owners in question. One declined to comment at this time. Another said they would likely have a statement and Wilson did not respond to our request.
Comments on the post led to the formation of the protest march today by community members. Elk Grove Laguna News was told by a source that City officials met with old town business owners over the weekend. Elk Grove Police Officers will be on the scene to make sure the protest remains peaceful. Roads are not expected to be blocked during the march. There could be some traffic delays. The city has put their surveillance camera back in the Old Town area, across from the salon as of this morning.
