Armed suspect killed by Elk Grove police has been identified

The Sacramento County Coroner has identified the armed suspect that was shot and killed by Elk Grove police early Saturday morning at the Extended Stay America hotel.  26 year old Nolberto Hernandez Leon of Sacramento was at the hotel when police responded to a call of shots fired. They encountered Leon in a hallway at the hotel.  At some point Leon shot himself and then threatened officers with a gun.  An Elk Grove police officer then shot Leon, who died from his injuries.

Elk Grove police have not released any other information regarding the shooting, but are expected to issue a statement this week.  The shooting came about 15 months since the last officer involved shooting in the department. That took place on January 7, 2017. Two suspects robbed a Jamba Juice and fled the scene. An Elk Grove police officer and his K9 partner located the suspects.  One of the suspects shot the K9 and his handler returned fire, hitting both suspects who were taken into custody.  The K9 survived and has since been retired.
