Did local progressives abandon Tracie Stafford?

With the election just a few days away, it appears that local progressives in Elk Grove have abandoned their early favorite Tracie Stafford for Steve Ly.

It was almost one year ago when Stafford officially announced she was running for mayor of Elk Grove and she was flanked by supporters like Amar Shergill and union activist Fabricio Sasso.  Just a couple of weeks earlier, Amy Champ, who was the Regional Director of the California Democratic Party for Region 4, commented on a post on Facebook and said “the Democratic Party supports Tracie and we will do everything in our power to get her elected. Trolls get ready.”

So what happened since that time? Why did they abandon her for Steve Ly, someone many progressives loathed after the 2016 election? Earlier this Spring and into summer support still seemed to be there.  Progressives Orlando Fuentes and Andres Ramos also joined Stafford and are running in separate council races. It seemed like the three were running as a team.  What made them switch gears and abandon Stafford and hitch their ride to Ly in hopes he could help Fuentes, Ramos and Moreno? Did they think she didn’t have a chance to win, so they will hold their nose, abandon their principles and vote for Ly? In the supposed “year of the woman” why are they not supporting two women running in 2018? They are choosing two men instead, Ly over Stafford and Fuentes over Nguyen.  Shergill hasn’t said anything about Stafford and also shifted his support to Steve Ly, pushing their Team Democrat platform, albeit in a non partisan race? Ironic since he’s holding a magazine in the photo above that says “powered by Women”. So what happened? Maybe we will find out more after the election and the fallout of the decision to abandon their principles to support a candidate that none of them really care for.
