Sacramento Sheriff’s Department releases information on officer-involved shooting Sunday

The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department issued a press release Monday with more details on the officer-involved shooting that took place on Sunday afternoon in Herald.

On October 6, 2019, at approximately 2:15 p.m. the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a call from the 13600 block of Bennett Road in Herald, CA. The caller indicated there was a known male at the location sitting in front of the caller’s property and possibly on drugs. The caller indicated the suspect was known to carry weapons. The Communication Center received multiple calls from the same block regarding the same subject. The callers provided a description of the suspect as a Hispanic or black male in his 30’s-40’s.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., a Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact with the suspect matching the description the callers provided. The suspect was lying in a ditch and appeared non-responsive upon first contact. The suspect awoke and began talking with the deputy. During the conversation, the deputy observed a handgun in the suspect’s waistband and immediately began giving the suspect verbal commands. The deputy observed the suspect reach for the handgun in his waistband. Fearing he would be shot by the suspect, the deputy fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect, identified as a 55-year-old male from Herald, was declared deceased at the scene. The handgun seen by the deputy in the suspect’s waistband was determined to be a Glock style airsoft gun.

The investigation into the incident will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. The deputy involved in the shooting is a 19 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office. In accordance with the Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation
