3 more people were killed this morning in a collision involving a wrong way driver on the freeway. This time it was westbound 80 near Madison Ave. That brings the total to 10 killed in 3 wrong way accidents in just a few weeks. The CHP is advising drivers to avoid using the fast lane late at night because for the wrong way driver that would be the slow lane. No word on whether alcohol or drugs played a part in this accident. The second accident that killed a mother and her two daughters was DUI related.

CHP just released information that the woman who drove the wrong on highway 50 a few weeks ago that killed 3, had a BAC of .20. That’s pretty darn drunk. Idiot.

As we approach the month of June, when all the graduations occur, there will be more DUI’s out on the road. June has always been a bad month. Best to stay home at night during this time if you can.

Unfortunately last night brings it to 4 wrong way crashes in the past few weeks –
The three brothers that were killed
Two sisters in high school, stepfather survived
Two retired friends from Stockton coming back from the casinos and last night
two friends from the bay area

Clearly the penalties for drunk driving need to be increased from the first offense. This is horrible. What a waste.

Not sure it would have mattered in these cases unless they were previous DUI offenders. At least two of them paid the ultimate price with their lives.

The two sisters and the mom were killed. The one from Stockton was 3 friends. That was the highway 50 crash.

Drunk Drivers have already passed the point of being able to comprehend the potential price they or others may pay for their actions. Increasing penalties won’t stop drunk drivers. One way to curtail drunk driving is to have blood alcohol testers in cars. That is not going to happen anytime soon, so we should be policing our friends and relatives. If they are drinking, they don’t get to drive.

I only wish these wrong way drivers would have hit a pole and killed only themselves instead of taking others with them. That would still be tragic but these incidents involving innocent loss of life is horrific.

Make the first offense mandatory 3 or 5 years in prison and the rates of DUI plummet. It has to be 100% not worth it to the vast majority of people. This would be hard to swallow, but I think people would adapt accordingly.

True but I don’t see that happening unless you adjust other penalties accordingly. Maybe have varying degrees of punishment based on how drunk you are.

No. It would have to be black and white or people will continue to risk it.

My point is it won’t pass as easily then.

In each of these last 4 incidents at least one innocent person or more was killed by this DUI drivers. Perhaps CHP’s handling of wrong way drivers on freeways should be more aggressive. Maybe CHP should be using lethal force to stop a wrong way driver instead of flashing their lights from the correct side of the freeway. Going head on at night on the freeway the wrong way is no different than pointing a gun at someone. It’s like driving a missile.

I haven’t completely vetted this idea and implementing would be nearly impossible but this is crazy. My sympathy for DUI drivers especially those tanked enough to enter and drive the wrong way on the freeway is zero.

I am so against driving after drinking that I don’t even think people should be driving after they have ANY booze. My uncle was killed by an idiot drunk driver. My ex was a social drunk that thought he should drive after drinking, and the day I left his ass was the day he tried to take my son with him in the car after he had been drinking.

Alcohol isn’t worth the risk. My first OB/GYN killed people(i think 3 of them?) driving drunk going the wrong way on the freeway. I understand needing to let off steam or stress, but if you want to drink, STAY HOME. Just my own experience with alcohol related idiots has clouded my view. It’s been a long time since I have had alcohol, and I have never been drunk or had a hangover. But if I did, it would be at home, or with someone else who was not drinking. It’s not worth it.

The only time the CHP has seen one in action was last night and they were on the other side of the freeway. Not much they could do. Pretty much impossible to stop. Not even sure how you could stop them if you see them. I don’t know what the solution is. Some have suggested those spike strips that flatten your tires if you go the wrong way like at parking lots. Problem with that is sometimes emergency vehicles need to use them going the wrong way.

Having been pulled over twice when I wasn’t drinking, that’s enough to scare me. I do occasionally have a drink with dinner.

Shoulder fired rocket could work. 🙂

I’m half joking but seriously this needs to stop.

I think they need to crack down on people leaving bars, but it’s not just them. It’s people leaving parties. As a younger adult I know I drove when I shouldn’t have. I think a lot of us probably did that and we were lucky nothing happened. Last week we had lunch downtown at Centros or Cinco De Mayo. There was 2 business guys eating lunch next to us and they each had 3 drinks. They didn’t act drunk or anything, but no way they would pass a breathalyzer I don’t think. I think they were both driving. So not worth it.

Put those flat tire spike strips on off ramps. Problem solved.

Have a land mine attached to it too. Future problems solved too.
