Knowing his daughter has turned into a skank. Caught part of the MTV video music awards last night. Interesting. Luckily not many people watch MTV anymore.

Disney must have seen the writing on the wall with her years ago because as soon as they stopped filming new episodes of her show, they also stopped showing repeats. They still show repeats of other shows that have been off for years, but not hers. They couldn’t distance themselves from her fast enough. After seeing that video, it’s hard to disagree with them.

That’s what the kids call “twerking” and evidently music.

    What is Robin Thicke thinking?

Love this reaction from Will Smith’s family

I think Miley is going the Britney Spears/Lindsey Lohan route. When you’re no longer a cute teen, turn to drugs and become a skank to stay in the news. No way she isn’t on drugs.

My daughter was watching it last night and came out to tell me I “had” to see this. I didn’t care about it, but she said it was absolutely humiliating and she was totally high. She too felt sorry for her father.

True but it’s not good publicity. I think as a singer you don’t really want this kind of publicity. It’s different for guys and gals. The guys want to come off as thugs because it makes them more appealing, unless you’re Justin Bieber, in which case you look like a fool because everyone knows you’re not tough. For women, being a skank isn’t a good career move. She won’t sell more records because of it. The younger kids will stop liking her. The older teens and young adults have already moved on from her.

Her perfermoance was totally skanky and the sad thing was my daughter came running down the stairs when she heard the the last song Miley sang by herself. I had to tell my daughter that in no uncertain terms was anyhting she saw appropiate for any place other then the strip club. My daughter laughed and said I know she is being really grosss right now but I still like the song. I could only laugh and my daughter absolutely loves blurred lines by Robin Thicke although I think he should now get tested for STD’s that bump and grind routine had to leave some cooties behind.

That whole thing was sad a appeared simply desperate. I don’t think Robin Thicke is any less skanky than Cirus though. He seems to be specializing in over-compensation.

I think she’s trying to emulate Madonna. Remember when Madonna pulled this outrageousness? Same thing, only I don’t think Miley can pull it off like Madonna did.

While LC updates you on the latest big band music and new releases from dead artists. 🙂

I wouldn’t expect too many almost 70 year olds to know what is hip. They’re just happy they wake up in the morning. 😉

Lady Gaga too. she’s managed to stay somewhat relevant. Madonna is a smart person. Not sure Cyrus is, plus she looks like she is on drugs.

You would laugh, Doc, if you knew what I’ve been listening to lately. I discovered that I really like some of the older punk rock and heavy metal music. I think it’s the bass line, not sure. Hated it when it was played. I alternate that with show tunes from the 50s and 60s, and throw in some traditional country music too. 😉

Her daddy said she would NEVER be one of those artists. I saw him YEARS ago in an interview with her, and she was looking all cute and innocent…….I hope someone pulls that clip out and shows it to her. I still haven’t seen the clip of last night. I tried to open Doc’s link but it wasn’t available?

    What is Robin Thicke thinking?

Are you serious? Have you seen his videos? He has an unrated version of Blurred Lines that shows topless women, and the song is suggestive to say the least. This was right up Robin Thicke’s alley, and I’m guessing they, MTV, Cyrus and Thicke, planned it so her song tailed into his.

I’m an old guy so there’s no way I’m watching MTV, well, unless they start up B & B again, so I would never know about this unless they were talking about it outside of MTV.

I think Beck hit the nail on the head 6 years ago and Billy Ray even admitted he wasn’t into the discipline. I’m not sure even a strong father could do a lot about this. Introducing young kids to fame and fortune, it’s going to be hard to control no matter how strong a parent you are. At some point the kid will say, it’s my money, let me do what I want. Ironically her song last night was about “it’s my body I can do what I want…”. Obviously her dad could have done a better job. Now she’s 20 and who knows where this will end up.

I meant doing that with her. I’ve seen the Blurred Lines video, so I’m not surprised he would do something like that. Of course it was all planned.

Every young female singer reared in the recording industry is encouraged to “break out” and push the envelope. It is part of the formula. This is how you can tell the manufactured “talent” from the actual singers and musicians. All of the post-Disney/post-Nickelodeon tweens end up here. The real singers and musicians don’t need to do this. I use Colbie Callait as my example. She is self-made, and has charted her own course, largely without any record company direction. She has worked with Disney, but because she wanted to do a particular song for them. She has picked her spots to make her “the Girl Next Door” and has pretty much succeeded. Taylor Swift has done much the same thing. Like her or not, she has made her own way without going skank. She appears to be following the Shania Twain model, which isn’t a bad choice.

I think country singers don’t usually go “skank” because it’s not good for their image in country music. If you look at some of the women of country, they can be sexy but not skanky. Also most are not teen stars too, so they are more mature. With the exception of Taylor Swift of course who was a teen.

Imagine what it is going to be like in 10-15-20 years from now. They will be put body parts in each other on stage and calling that art! And yes your great grand kids will be watching too!

One of my FB friends is a female singer, in her early 20’s, in a local band and she posted on her FB page how awful she thought it was. A bunch of her friends, also younger, replied and agreed with her. I have not seen one positive comment anywhere on FB, Twitter or the Internet about her performance. So it’s not just older people. It’s younger people too who think it was bad.

It has nothing to do with her music. Just her performance.

My 15 yr old niece is in theater and sings and even thought she was a skanky little thing last night. Miley chose her path. She very well could have gone against the grain and said NO. After her wholesome upbringing and her father acting like such a genuine guy who was looking out for her and keeping her grounded, I am surprised her morals allowed her to do this little “scene.” That was nothing short of soft core porn. She really surprised me.

This has been coming awhile though. Remember a couple of years ago there was the magazine cover of her posing in some type of revealing shirt? It was a hot topic on here at the time. I wasn’t surprised really she did that because I could see she was heading in that direction by how she was dressing and acting.

Oh the horror! This will surely be end of civilization as we know it!!!

All you old farts need to just pipe down. If it’s not your cup of tea, then don’t drink it. Isn’t this what everyone says about new artists pushing the envelope? Every generation seems to have this moment. Remember the Beatles and their LONG HAIR? Outrageous! Remember when Elvis GYRATED his hips? OMG!!! What about Madonna’s SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MOVES? Over the top!! Sure didn’t stop any of them from selling records though.

I really didn’t find anything Miley did all that outrageous. Madonna was way more sexual on stage, and that was 20 years ago!

And people complained about Madonna back then. I don’t think Madonna was “way more sexual”. You can’t be unless you’re actually having sex. I don’t think anyone said its the end of the world. If you don’t see anything wrong with it, that’s fine. Would you want your daughter to act like that on stage? Again it’s people of all ages who think its skanky. You’re by far in the minority if you don’t.

Well, I’m a gra-maw and I think it’s crap. “Oh well, that’s how society is” is also crap. Is there no line anymore? Shouldn’t there be? It’s because people say “oh well” that so much has turned to crap. It’s ok for people to simulate sex etc. I agree. I don’t think that was the forum to do it, on a televised show where kids are watching, especially her younger fans who may have tuned in to see their Hannah Montana person. Should we not have ratings for movies anymore? Because hey, that’s society so oh well.

Trash is trash. Parents should teach the difference. For the record, my 25 year old thought it was stupid and trashy too.

If the Beatles did what Cyrus did, there would have been no British Invasion. We would all be worshipping the Beach Boys…

I meant one columnist brought up race. I don’t think that’s an opinion too many share.

I think this topic is WAY overblown. It’s only good for her near future. I think Tom’s comment was accurate–she did what she was advised to do to break out of an image. Now her name is all over and everyone will be watching next time.

As far as Madonna doing the same things, I don’t remember the twat thumping and she wasn’t 20 years old. It was tasteless and completely unappealing and not even done technically well. But, like Paula Deen, she’ll come out better eventually because of it.

The topic will die off quickly or when something else comes up. It was all over the news yesterday. Less today. Madonna did some risque things and don’t forget about the Madonna/Britney Spears kiss on the VMA’s a few years ago. Madonna was older and not a teen star.

    Clothed ‘sex’ on stage?

    Yawn.

I guess I’m getting too old for this.
It takes more than that to engage my imagination anymore.

    LOL.

One of my FB friends posted a video of her daddy doing the live version of achey breaky heart back in the day. Watching him dance was pretty painful. I see where she got her dance moves. At least Madonna could dance. Mylie looked like a hurt animal up there gyrating.

I think that is what was so painful to watch she looked like she had drunk girl swag and like it was less intentional and more of a tragic mistake. Plenty of young dancers dance sexy and do similar moves and it isn’t as skanky looking. Ciara, Rhianna, and even LMFAO had some crazy frat boy moves the resemble that foam finger in the crotch area move that still don’t look as desperate as it did when she did it. She is at least getting attention I hope she cleans it up little now that people are talking if was intentional and not just a tragic mistake.

Look, I’ve been trying really hard not to correct you on this, but given how many times you have typed her name in the last 24 hours, it’s time you realize her name is spelled M-i-l-e-y-Miley.

Rhianna is a LOT better looking too. I don’t think the young Miley has much going for her.

Nobody said it was the end of the world, except for me. That was sarcasm on my part.

Oh Madonna was way sexual. Maybe you’ve already purged those memories from your brain, or perhaps you never saw her in concert? She rubbed her crotch while lying on a bed on stage and simulated a screaming orgasm. I’d say that’s pretty sexual. In comparison, Miley was actually quite tame.

I’d tend to agree that the performance was a bit on the skanky side, but I guess where I differ from everyone else is that it didn’t really bother me. Also, I tend to give her MORE leeway due to her young age, rather than LESS, because I think it’s a time when a lot of young adults make poor decisions while trying to prove to the world that they are no longer a kid – especially ones who want to shed their Disneyesque image.

Madonna pushed the envelope WAY more than Miley is capable of doing and she turned out fine. How many of you hear thought she was going straight to Hell with her blended sexual/religious references? Also, most of you (and myself included) weren’t watching the MVAs – it isn’t meant for us. It’s a bit awkward because of Miley’s Disney connection but from a business standpoint, it’s the direct she needs to take to break out from that past. She’ll end up fine and very famous.

As to her dad, it’s obvious you’re not watching The Soup. They have many clips of Miley acting sexual and then he is seen with a smirk on his face. On the outside, he may say bad things about it but from a business standpoint, he gets it.

I only turned it on because of comments on twitter. That was the first time I had watched it in probably ten years. The comments that got me interested were from younger people. If they thought it was bad then I knew it had to be bad.

Madonna was older and we didn’t see her as a young girl. With Miley people remember her as that sweet Hannah Montana.

But that’s not necessary and I don’t think it’s an act. I think that’s who she is right now. You can have a little edge and not go these extremes. Look at Katy Perry, Pink etc. they have their raunchy side too. Or even look at people like Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift. Going “skank” isn’t going to help her career. Yes we all are talking about her now but she’s closer to Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes and Britney than Madonna.

From the other end of the spectrum, we have Taylor Swift who started out at 16 and 7 years later still hasn’t turned into a skank and is popular with kids and adults. She played a sold out show on Tuesday. I am sure her biggest fan SEA was there to see it. 🙂

    http://www.sacbee.com/2013/08/28/5686591/swift-all-caps-he-au-ipo-oswift.html

Two things stayed constant at Taylor Swift’s sold-out concert Tuesday night: She always wore red, and her fans screamed relentlessly.

Swift, the 23-year-old sensation from Nashville and seven-time Grammy Award winner, drew more than 12,000 to Sleep Train Arena. Sacramento marked the final California concert and near-end of the first leg of her 47-stop “Red” tour.

She opened with “State of Grace,” a track off “RED,” as her tall, slender silhouette displayed across a red curtain.

In a collared shirt, high-waisted shorts, red lipstick, red glittery shoes and wielding a matching red, glittery guitar, she pranced around and twirled in circles.

Her performance included light shows, drummers suspended in the air, multiple elaborate sets, many costume changes and a brief escort into a suddenly shrieky, pushy crowd.

Swift broke onto the country music scene with her eponymous debut album in 2006 when she was 16 years old. At age 20, she became the youngest winner of the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her second album, “Fearless.”

Her list of accolades is exhausting: “RED” sold 1.2 million copies in its first week and topped Billboard charts for seven weeks. She holds multiple other Billboard records to boot.

The teenage set adores her – she’s the most-awarded person in the history of the Teen Choice Awards. And on Sunday, Swift won best female video for “I Knew You Were Trouble” at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Granite Bay sisters Gabrielle and Lauren Helfer, 20 and 14, respectively, were dressed up in homemade renditions of Swift’s perfume WonderStruck – red felt bulbs with gold accents.

“She’s fearless,” Gabrielle said of Swift. “She’s musical. She’s kind and inspirational.”

The preteen set is likewise enamored.

Lindsay Ryan, Grace Oliva and Liv Holscher, all 9-year-olds from the Marin area, could barely contain their excitement hours before Swift took the stage.

With the help of their parents, they each carried a letter of “R-E-D,” lit up around the edges. Swift’s favorite number, “13,” was etched in glitter on their hands.

Grace said the three best friends have been fans “since forever,” and that they’d be skipping school today since they were up so late for the concert two hours from home.

Parents said they liked how their children were Swift fans because she is relatively wholesome compared with some other pop icons. One dad cited Miley Cyrus’ shocking MTV Video Music Awards performance Sunday. Another mom said she appreciated how Swift wrote her own songs.

Susan and Geoff Brandt of Roseville came with their 16-year-old daughter, Rebecca, and her best friend.

Susan Brandt said the teens have been known to mouth Swift’s lyrics, accompanied by hand motions, across classrooms.

“Every song, they can pick out something in their lives to relate it to – the friendships, the boys, the coming of age,” Susan Brandt said.

Swift’s music strengthened Geoff Brandt’s relationship with his daughter, too. He’s a fan, and it gives them something to bond over.

“She gets upset because her dad knows all the lyrics to every Taylor Swift song, too,” Geoff Brandt said with a laugh.

Tuesday’s spectacle included some intimate moments: video of Swift as a child, and a sweet monologue about breakups, which was the basis for “RED.”

“Those emotions, I think, make you stronger,” Swift said.

She also thanked the fans, who showed up decked out with costumes, red glitter, fake tattoos of Swift’s lyrics and crafty, lit-up signs that flashed the singer’s name and song titles.

Wow, you all are funny. She will become more popular from this BECAUSE you all hate it. That’s what many kids like these days (or for that matter, throughout time). Because us “adults” hate what she has done, it becomes cool to the younger folks. In a month, this will be forgotten (when we are bombing Syria and the next celebrity does something newsworthy).

Oh Doc, I still maintain that Swift can’t sing. Seriously, I’ve worked her rehearsals. It’s painful. That said, I’ve met her and observed her behavior in different situations backstage. She’s classy. Like quoted in the article, she’s fearless, musical, kind and inspirational

I don’t think she’s a vocal talent and I don’t like her songs as I’m not into teen angst and breakup songs. But she’s huge and popular and I can’t picture her dry humping on a stage or rolling her tongue out like a giraffe.

Steve, you and millions of others love her stuff. There’s a reason for that. She’s talented and doesn’t act a fool. Doc gives me crap because I don’t believe she has vocal talent, but then I’ve heard her raw. It doesn’t matter in the slightest. After talking with her it’s impossible not to like her person. Do I buy her stuff? No but they send it to me every year and I give it to someone who enjoys it. Miley isn’t in the same league.

Who buys music because of how a singer sounds unplugged? Not too many I don’t think. Most buy or listen because how it sounds on the radio.

I don’t love or hate Miley Cyrus. I am completely ambivolent to her and her schtick. I do think what she did appeared sad and desperate, but sure, it functioned as the handlers wanted. She is back in the public eye, and she is not Hannah Montana anymore. Great. Let’s see what she does with it.

Taylor Swift has talent, and beyond that, she seeks out and has found good people to help her. She manages her career, and is led by those, who know who she is and can maximize her skill set. She will come to that crossroads where she can’t be a little girl anymore, and we will see how she moves forward. My bet is that she manages the transition well.

Vocal talent? Some of my favorite singers would get bounced the first day on any of the “singing” show on TV. Dave Matthews? Rocks in his mouth. Stevie Nicks? Billie GOAT. Joey Strummer? Um, well… He’s Joey Strummer (think SCKEEEEECH!). Vocal talent matters in opera and on Broadway.

Being a skank should raise the ire of feminists who see women willfully presenting themselves as sex vessels yet instead they support this behavior by calling it sexual empowerment. There are no moral absolutes in this society anymore which leads me to believe that the radicals have won if you consider rampant sexual indiscretions and an STD epidemic winning. The lunatics are in power and the decay comes from the top down and as the older among us die off, decency dies with them.

If this is the world you want to raise your kids in, keep voting liberal progressives into power. Keep embracing the lie that freedom means doing whatever you want as long as it doesn’t offend a powerful special interest group.

You’re totally right about vocal talent Doc and tom. I tend to lean towards those who can sing for my tastes, but there are exceptions. I love Jackson Browne. Love him, disagree with his politics but love love his music. One point for Doc and Tom!

    Yea for us!! 🙂

Even who and who can’t sing is totally subjective. Music is one area where others opinions don’t mean much to me. A person can be a “great” singer but its meaningless if I don’t like their music.
