Earlier this week we sat down with the owner of the Coffee Spot Co, Taras Cherny, to discuss their upcoming one year anniversary. On October 1, 2015, he purchased the former Grace Coffee location near Old Town Elk Grove. It is the drive through kiosk on the corner of Elk Grove Blvd and Elk Grove-Florin Road. The Coffee Spot Co is one of only two independently owned non chain coffee shops in Elk Grove. Their focus is coffee, lattes and espressos. They feature fresh roasted coffee as well as cold drinks and treats.
We asked Taras what made him decide to open up his own business. He said he was making a career change and he and his wife wanted something that they could use to help with their youth ministry. Both are youth ministers working with at risk youth. They also wanted to be able to give back to the community and have given away money to those in need in the Elk Grove area during the past year.
Cherny told us that in the past year business is up 57% and they have increased from 6 to 10 employees. He said he tries to stop by 3-4 times a week and meet customers and talk to the employees. He said all of the employees are either full time moms or high school and college students. He stressed that they are very family oriented. They work around the schedules of their employees. Family and school come first. He credits the increase in business to using social media and following what his competitors are doing. They have a very popular Instagram page.
Taras told us that they love the Elk Grove community. He said the people in Elk Grove truly care about each other here. He has plans to expand the business and open another location in the future. He did tell us where, but we are keeping that a secret for now.
