Possible fatal accident shuts down southbound I-5 near Elk Grove

A possible fatal accident on southbound Interstate 5, between Laguna Blvd and Elk Grove Blvd shut down the freeway for nearly an hour. The accident occurred around 10 am today. Traffic was being diverted off I-5 at Laguna to detour back to Elk Grove Blvd and back onto southbound I-5. According to witnesses the accident involved a small car and possibly a big rig. Witnesses reported seeing a covered body on the freeway.  No official word yet to confirm if there was a fatality.

Updated 2:30 pm. The victim survived but is in critical condition. The SacBee reported he stepped in front of a big rig.
