Elk Grove City Councilman and current Vice Mayor, Darren Suen, will be announcing on Thursday that he is running for Mayor of Elk Grove. Suen currently represents District 1 in the city. Suen was appointed in December 2014 to fill the seat vacated when Jim Cooper was elected to the state assembly. In November 2016, Suen ran for the seat and won easily. Suen joins current mayor Steve Ly and challenger Tracie Stafford in the race. Ly became Mayor in 2o16. He became the first Hmong mayor in the United States. Stafford ran for Mayor in 2016, finishing third behind Ly and Kevin Spease.
It has been expected that Suen would enter the race. He is being endorsed by fellow council members Pat Hume, Steve Detrick and Stephanie Nguyen. The official announcement will come on Thursday at California Northstate University.
