CalTrans Press Release

GALT – A big rig crashed into an overhead highway message board and then its trailer flipped over this afternoon, forcing the closure of northbound State Highway 99 in Galt.

The crash happened at about 1:15 p.m. on Highway 99 between the Walnut Avenue and Twin Cities Road exits. The big rig lost its load of concrete pieces. The message board was knocked over and severely damaged.

Northbound traffic is being detoured off at Walnut Avenue to a frontage road, to Twin Cities Road and back onto northbound 99. Traffic is backed up about 4 miles into San Joaquin County.

Caltans is on scene handling traffic control and clean-up, but an estimated time to reopen the highway wasn’t immediately available.

Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue traffic updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ or download the QuickMap app on iTunes or Google Play.
