On Wednesday local emergency agencies unveiled a Text 911 service. If you have an emergency you can now text 911 and it will be sent to local dispatchers who can then respond to your text. The motto of the new emergency system is “Call if you can – Text if you can’t”
The new service is meant for those who are hearing or speech impaired or may not be able to talk due to a medical emergency or possibly a crime or domestic violence in progress. When texting 911, you are asked to include your name, address and emergency. Use plain English. If possible you are encouraged to still call 911 as it will allow a faster response and give dispatchers the information more quickly. The current system can not accept photos or videos. It is also currently English only.
