Elk Grove comes in at #14 in list of best cities to raise a family on West Coast

Elk Grove came in at #14 on a list of the top 150 cities to live on the West Coast. The list was compiled by Smart Asset. Nine of the top ten were California cities. The only other Sacramento area city in the top 25 was Folsom at #2. Bay Area cities dominated the top 10, with 7 cities and the #1 city, San Ramon.

The list used 10 factors to determine the best place to raise a family.

• housing costs as a percent of income,
• annual cost of childcare,
• percent of residents under age 19,
• average math proficiency,
• average reading proficiency,
• high school graduation rate,
• average spending per pupil,
• poverty rate,
• unemployment rate
• crime rate.

Elk Grove had a higher unemployment than any other city in the top 25.
