Suspect identified in SMUD truck car jacking

The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department has identified the man who carjacked a SMUD truck in Elk Grove on Friday.

The suspect was identified as Christopher St. Charles, 36, of Sacramento. St. Charles used a metal pipe to break the window of the truck near Waterman and Grantline. He took the truck by force from the SMUD employee.

After stealing the truck, St. Charles drove the Wilton area, knocking down gates and going through fields. At one point after turning down a dead end street, he drove at an Elk Grove police officer, who then fired his gun at the suspect.

St. Charles was eventually detained near Dillard Road and Highway 99. He was arrested and is still in custody on $750,000 bail
