Elk Grove Civic Center has a new name, District56

It was about 18 months ago that city leaders were trying to come up with a new name for the Elk Grove Civic Center. That included spending $38,000 on consultants that came up with names that nobody liked.

The Elk Grove Civic Center (now District56) is an area near the recently opened Elk Grove Aquatics Center. It is roughly the area between Elk Grove Blvd and Lotz Parkway, and between Big Horn Blvd and Laguna Springs.

Besides the aquatic center, there will be a senior center, a veteran’s hall, and a community center. The area is comprised of 56 acres. During the September City Council meeting, city staff presented a report on the area and the naming of the center. With the center opening soon, staff suggested a name was needed to help with the branding and marketing. District56 was chosen by a 4-1 vote with Steve Detrick voting no.
