Suspected DUI driver kills one, three injured in Calvine Road collision

A driver suspected of driving under the influence collided with an SUV, killing one person and sending three others to the hospital, one with major injuries.

The incident happened around 8 pm Saturday night at the intersection of Calvine Road and Bader Road on the border between Elk Grove and the county of Sacramento.

The CHP believes the suspected DUI driver ran a red light and slammed into an SUV. The passenger in the front seat of the DUI driver later died at the hospital and a passenger in the rear seat sustained major injuries. The driver sustained moderate injuries. The SUV that was hit had four occupants, one of which suffered minor injuries.

The CHP is investigating the case. The name of the DUI driver has not yet been released. The Sacramento Coroner will release the name of the deceased passenger

Comments on social media indicate the intersection is the scene of frequent red light runners and collisions.

On 11/9/2019 at approximately 7:55 pm, a 43 years old female from Elk Grove was driving her Toyota SUV westbound on Calvine Road approaching the intersection with Bader Road on a green-phased traffic signal. Steven Bhardwaj, a 33 years old male from Plymouth, was driving a Honda Accord northbound on Bader Road approaching a red-phased traffic signal at an unknown speed. Bhardwaj ran the red light and the front of the Toyota collided with the right front passenger door of the Honda. Both vehicles veered towards the northwest corner of the intersection where the Honda struck a pedestrian signal. The driver of the Toyota and her 3 passengers in the Toyota were uninjured. There were two passengers in the Honda, a 35 years old male from Sutter Creek was seated in the right front seat, and a 51 years old male was seated in the rear seat. Fire Department personnel arrived on-scene and began CPR on the right front passenger of the Honda. Bhardwaj was pinned in the driver’s seat with moderate injuries and was transported to by ambulance to a local hospital. Both of the passengers in the Honda suffered major injuries and were transported to local hospitals by ambulance. After arriving at the hospital, the right front passenger of the Honda succumbed to his injuries. Officers contacted Bhardwaj at the hospital and observed signs and symptoms of alcohol consumption. Officers determined that Bhardwaj was under the influence of alcohol placed him under arrested for DUI causing injury/death. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after next of kin is notified.
