The South Sacramento CHP is investigating two fatal hit and runs that have taken place on Interstate 5 this week. Both incidents involve pedestrians being hit by multiple vehicles.
The first incident took place on Monday, March 23, around 10 pm
On 3/23/2020 at approximately 10 pm, the CHP – Sacramento Communications Center began to receive calls of a pedestrian in the roadway on southbound I-5, north of Cosumnes River Blvd. The pedestrian was described as an older female in a tan coat and wearing a hat. As units from the South Sacramento Area began to respond to the call, dispatch informed the units that the pedestrian had been struck by a blue or green older model BMW that fled the scene. Units arrived on scene and confirmed that the pedestrian had sustained fatal injuries. Southbound I-5 was closed for approximately four and a half hours for scene investigation and cleanup. It is believed that several vehicles may have struck the pedestrian and all fled the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is attempting to identify the pedestrian and will release the identity once next of kin is notified. Anyone who may have been involved in this collision or have information on the identity of any individual who may have been involved are asked to call the South Sacramento Area Office at (916) 681-2300 and ask for Officer Young.
The second incident happened on Wednesday, March 25 around 10:30 pm
On 3/25/2020 at approximately 10:34 pm, the CHP – Sacramento Communications Center received a call of a male pedestrian kneeling in the center median and then laying down in the #2 lane of northbound I-5 south of Florin Road. At 10:36 pm, it was reported that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Multiple units from the South Sacramento Area responded to the scene. As the units were responding, they were informed that multiple vehicles had struck the pedestrian and had pulled into the center median to wait for emergency personnel. Units arrived on scene and closed all lanes and diverted all traffic to the right shoulder. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is attempting to identify the deceased and his identity will be released once next of kin is notified.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that the pedestrian was initially a victim of a hit-and-run traffic collision which occurred on southbound I-5. The pedestrian then crawled onto the northbound lanes of I-5 were he sustained fatal injuries. Evidence located in the southbound lanes suggest that the vehicle was silver in color but no other description of the suspect vehicle is known at this time.
All of the drivers involved in the collision in the northbound lanes cooperated with responding officers and were released from the scene. All lanes of northbound I-5 were closed for approximately three hours for scene investigation and cleanup.
Anyone with knowledge of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run collision which occurred on southbound I-5 is requested to contact the South Sacramento Area Office at (916) 681-2300 and ask for Officer Jim Young or Officer S. Taylor.
