ELK GROVE, Calif. – August 6, 2020 – The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and James Rutter Middle School happily announce the selection of Lynda Bettencourt as Sacramento County Teacher of the Year for 2021. Ms. Bettencourt teaches at James Rutter Middle School as a study skills and intervention teacher and she was one of two District teachers nominated by her peers to go before the county selection committee. Out of 12 local district Teachers of the Year nominees, her interview propelled her to the top as one of two teachers chosen to advance to the statewide competition where five teachers will be identified as California’s Teachers of the Year.

After taking a few days to process the magnitude of the honor, Bettencourt said, “I am overwhelmed with joy and appreciation to join the ranks as a County Teacher of the Year. I continue to feel immeasurable gratitude toward the many educators and students throughout my life who influenced my teaching career.”

Since 1990, Bettencourt has taught at six schools in EGUSD, including Cosumnes Oaks High School, Joseph Kerr Middle School, Harriet Eddy Middle School, Toby Johnson Middle School, Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School and now at James Rutter Middle School.

This year, in lieu of a reception, a virtual celebration took place on July 30, 2020 where each teacher spoke about what it meant for them to be chosen as Teachers of the Year for their district.
