Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy, K9 and suspect killed in shootout Monday night

A Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy and a K9 were killed and a second deputy was also shot during a shootout late Monday night. The second deputy is expected to survive. The suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, two deputies attempted to make a traffic stop around 10 pm near Arden Way and Morse Avenue. The suspect initially stopped and then fled, eventually crashing in the Cal Expo parking lot near Hurley and Ethan Way.

The suspect refused to exit the vehicle. Deputies used what the department called “less lethal” means to shoot out the back window. A Sheriff’s K9 was sent in and the suspect shot and killed the K9. Deputies returned fire. Two deputies were shot in the exchange and taken to the hospital where one of the deputies did not survive. The suspect was also killed.

Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said the slain deputy was a 6 year veteran and leaves behind a wife and infant child. The names of the deputy and suspect have not been released.

Jones also said the suspect was a known parolee. No details on why the suspect was being stopped.
