Elk Grove police investigating deadly shooting

The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that took place Thursday night. This is third shooting in the last two weeks in the city.

EGPD issued the following press release:

ELK GROVE, CA – On Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 10:25 p.m., the Elk Grove Police Department responded to the 9200 block of Starfish Way for reports of shots heard in the area. Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male, lying in the roadway, suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers and fire personnel began life saving measures, however, the victim succumbed to their injures. The name of the victim will not be released, and identification will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. 

Through the course of the investigation, detectives learned there was a verbal argument between the victim and the suspect that escalated when the suspect drew a firearm and fired at the victim.

Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to call the Elk Grove Police Department Detective Bureau at (916) 478-8060 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Tips can also be sent via SMS text message by entering CRIMES (274637) on a cell phone, followed by Tip732 (agency identification number) and the message.

Update April 6, 2021. The suspect, 36 year old Marvin Stephney turned himself in at the Sacramento County Jail on April 5, 2021
