On Monday, November 22, Elk Grove will honor 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson with a victory parade. Larson had 10 wins (11 if you include the non-points-paying NASCAR All-Star Race) in 2021. The most wins in a NASCAR season since Jimmy Johnson did it in 2007.
The 29-year-old Larson attended Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove and in 2014 was the Key to the City recipient in Elk Grove. Larson began his racing career as a teen. In 2012 he was signed by Chip Ganassi Racing. He eventually worked his way through the NASCAR ranks and won Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year in 2014.
In early 2020, Larson was suspended from NASCAR for using a racial slur during an online racing game. Larson then attended sensitivity training and volunteered with different organizations learning more about social justice. In October 2020, Larson was reinstated by NASCAR and signed by Hendrick Motorsports. Larson capped off his return to NASCAR by winning the final race in Phoenix on November 7. Afterwards, an emotional Larson talked about his win.
