Coming up this week in Elk Grove, February 7, 2022

to provide in-person and virtual tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a special focus on taxpayers who are over 50 or have low to moderate income. In-person appointments will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from February 8 to March 10 in the Captain’s Quarters at the Elk Grove Aquatic Center. Pitch Elk Grove is a new startup competition that offers entrepreneurs in the greater Sacramento region a chance to gain visibility, receive mentorship, and win up to $10k in prize money. Find out how to enter.

We’re counting on your help. The Point-In-Time (PIT) count of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness led by Sacramento Steps Forward provides valuable data on the number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in our community and the region. Elk Grove’s count will be conducted on Thursday, February 24.
Your help is important in capturing this crucial community data. 
Register to join the count. Make sure to specify on your registration form that you want to join the Elk Grove count scheduled on February 24.

Think twice before throwing medicine in the trash or flushing it down the toilet. The Elk Grove Police Station has two secure drop off bins for your unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals. Stop by 8400 Laguna Palms Way Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to drop off medications.
Learn other ways to safely dispose of sharps and medications.

Nominate that exceptional someone you know for the 2022 Mayor’s Volunteer Awards. Nominations are being accepted in several categories: Residents, Neighborhoods & Community Groups; Social & Community Services; Arts, Culture & Heritage; Children & Youth Support; Sports & Recreation and Young Volunteer of the Year.

Register for the Citizen’s Academy. The Elk Grove Police Department invites you to join the 2022 Citizen’s Academy. The ten-week program is designed to share the various aspects of local policing. The program covers procedures from patrol and investigations, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, 911 communications, and code enforcement.
The Citizens’ Academy is free of charge and meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Elk Grove Police Department. Sign up for the session that starts February 22. 

There are funds available for non-profits. We’re accepting applications.
The City of Elk Grove is accepting applications for four City grant programs for programs and activities taking place from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. Nonprofit organizations may apply for funding to support a variety of programming ranging from event sponsorship, community service programs that benefit low-income Elk Grove residents, public service activities, housing programs, and public facility improvements.
