Jim Cooper announces run for Sacramento County Sheriff

After months of speculation, Assemblyman Jim Cooper will announce today that he is running for Sacramento County Sheriff. Current Sheriff Scott Jones announced he will not seek re-election and will run for Congress.

Cooper worked for the Sacramento Sheriff for 30 years and was one of the original members of the Elk Grove City Council when Elk Grove incorporated in 2000. Cooper received the most and served as the new city’s first Mayor before it became an elected position years later.

Cooper served on the Elk Grove City Council until 2014 when he ran for California State Assembly and won. He was re-elected in 2016, 2018, and 2020.

Outgoing Sheriff Scott Jones has already endorsed Capt. Jim Barnes to be his successor.
