EGUSD to end mask mandates for schools

The Elk Grove Unified School District announced on Tuesday that it will follow the county and state masking guidelines and make wearing masks optional. This will apply to students, staff and parents.

Below is the statement from the EGUSD

March 8, 2022

Dear Elk Grove Unified Students and Families,

Yesterday, we received updated guidance from Sacramento County Public Health and we want to share the following updates with you.

Elk Grove Unified will continue to rely on known COVID-19 mitigation tools and practices, such as exclusion of symptomatic and COVID-19-positive individuals, masking, testing and vaccination, to reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission at school and school-affiliated activities and events.

When planning for events in the future, we will remain mindful that there remains the potential for the emergence of new COVID-19 variants and/or surges, which could necessitate adjustment (e.g. reduced capacity, move indoors to outdoors), postponement, or cancellation of such events.? EGUSD will work with local public health officials on making adjustments.

  • Masking Indoors: Effective March 12th, State of California universal masking requirements in Pre-K-12 and Childcare settings will move to a strong recommendation.
    • This applies to students and staff, as well as parents/guardians, visitors, and/or spectators. No individual should be treated differently or be harassed for choosing to wear or not wear a mask.
    • Employees can continue to request face coverings at no cost and can wear them at work, regardless of vaccination status, without fear of retaliation.
    • Other face covering requirements within the Cal OSHA ETS remain in place, including provisions requiring face coverings in outbreaks or when required by orders from the CDPH.
  • Exposure Decisions: The SCPH Decision Forest was reduced to one null in the event a student and/or staff member is exposed to COVID-19.
  • Notifications: Notification of exposure will now go to ALLlikely contacts of a potential exposure and will include recommending testing.

(Note: In Elk Grove Unified, school site exposure will continue to be monitored, school principals and/or supervisors will continue to notify all staff of a potential exposure and exposure notifications will be sent to all likely contacts at a school site. In the event a classroom/team/group has three or more cases of COVID-19 within a two week period, EGUSD will report these cases to SCPH to receive further guidance.)

  • EGUSD is awaiting further updates on requirements related to visual and performing arts activities and indoor athletics.

This information can be found on the SCPH Schools webpage.

We are looking forward to taking the next step in planning our traditional end of the school year activities while being mindful of everyone’s safety. Open communication between families and our school staff continues to be one of our best tools in supporting the health and safety of our students and staff.

Thank you for your support, partnership and cooperation,

EGUSD Leadership
