On Wednesday, 8/31/2022 at 7:45 a.m. Roseville Police received a call from a resident who reported finding a noose hanging from the play structure of a park in the 4000 block of Brick Mason Circle. The reporting party had removed the noose from the play structure, thrown it in a garbage can, and then called police.

An officer responded to the park to investigate the incident. Once on scene, the officer spoke with the reporting party. They also retrieved the noose from the garbage can, to be booked as evidence. The officer also walked the park looking for other clues or evidence of a crime, nothing else notable was found. It’s unknown at this time if the noose was put in the park as a prank, an indicator of suicide, or a racially motivated threat.

Although this incident does not meet all the requirements to be classified as a hate crime, the Department recognizes the seriousness of this incident and has taken several steps to further investigate:

– Coordinated with park maintenance staff to assess past vandalism at the park, to-date, no graffiti or vandalism has been racially motivated

– Increased neighborhood patrols, especially overnight, looking for anyone in the park

– Canvassed the neighborhood surrounding the park, looking for any home surveillance or doorbell camera footage that could provide further information

– Internal incident review by Executive Team.

The Roseville Police Department takes incidents like this very serious. The Department understands when residents feel safe in our community, our quality of life improves. When incidents like this happen in our community, we want to send a clear message that racially motivated crimes will not be tolerated and will be investigated to the fullest extent possible.
