Sacramento Sheriff’s Department releases video of deputy shooting man with a machete

On Tuesday the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department released body camera footage of a Sheriff’s deputy shooting a man carrying a machete. The department also released a timeline of the incident.


The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Sheriff’s Office understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed.

On September 28, 2022, at 8:39:53 A.M., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call from an adult female subject residing on the 5400 block of Enrico Boulevard who stated her husband wanted to kill himself and had a machete in his hands. When the call-taker asked about the subject’s mental health, the caller stated that her husband did not have a mental health condition. She went on to say that he did not take medications for mental health and that he did not have a history of violence towards anyone, including law enforcement and that he had never been placed on a Mental Health Hold. The caller said she was currently outside while her husband was alone inside the residence.

Deputies were dispatched to the call at 8:40:18 A.M. and the first deputy arrived on scene at 8:44:39 A.M. When the deputy arrived, he contacted the caller – the subject’s wife, who standing in her front yard when the subject appeared on the front porch holding a 24-inch machete. The suicidal subject advanced towards the deputy and the subject’s wife. The deputy pushed the wife out of the path of the advancing subject to remove her from immediate harm and attempted to retreat while commanding the subject to drop the raised machete. Once the deputy was backed up to the fence and the subject continued to ignore the commands and advance towards the deputy and female, the deputy fired his duty weapon striking the subject multiple times.

The deputy, a 4-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, rendered aid to the subject until Metro Fire arrived and transported him to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The deceased subject is a 55-year-old male who resided in Sacramento County. There is no further information at this time. No deputies or civilians sustained any injuries as a result of this incident.

The investigation into the incident will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Office’s jurisdiction. Independent review of the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Inspector General. In accordance with the Sheriff’s Office’s policies and procedures, the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. As is the case with all officer involved shootings, Sheriff’s Office has published a community briefing video that includes additional information, 9-1-1 call audio and body cam video in accordance with state law.

The material being released has been identified as significant to this incident and includes the original 911 call and body cam video. All videos being released have been minimally redacted to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of those involved. This is an active investigation.
