City of Elk Grove Update

Staying Storm Ready
Weather in the new year has challenged the way we live and travel this month. The National Weather Service predicts this storm will bring 3″ to 4″ inches of rain to our already saturated spaces between now and Tuesday with more on the way. The City’s storm response team is ready to respond to local issues. Make sure you are prepared to protect your home and the ones you love.
Evacuation Order: An evacuation order was issued last night for Wilton and nearby areas in Elk Grove in anticipation of rising waters and weakened levees. Learn more
Sandbags – A self-serve sandbag station is operating for Elk Grove residents at the future Library Building – 9260 Elk Grove Blvd. Bring your own shovel. Bags and sand are provided while supplies last. 25 bag limit.
Public Works Hotline — Report roadway flooding, downed trees, or clogged storm drains to (916) 687-3005.DIAL 9-1-1 for downed lines or other storm related emergencies.Turn Around, Don’t Drown — Do not attempt to drive or walk on roadways with moving water. 

MLK Celebrations Honor the Dream
Elk Grove community members can come together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through two celebrations scheduled in the coming week.
Councilmember Rod Brewer and local community members will host a candlelight vigil and program this Saturday, January 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Old Town Plaza.
Elk Grove residents Sam and Char Starks will lead MLK365 to host the annual March for the Dream event on Monday, January 16 beginning at Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Blvd.) at 8 a.m. An Elk Grove group of elected officials, staff and community members will participate in the march and encourage Elk Grove residents to join the group in the march. Learn more.

Federal Funding Advances Local Projects
Elk Grove got good news from the federal government over the holidays. The signing of the Bipartisan Year-End Omnibus included $4 million in funding to complete two local projects, the Laguna Creek Inter-Regional Trail Overcrossing at State Route 99 and Old Town Streetscape Improvements. More than $40 million in federal funding for Sacramento-area transportation and housing projects was included in the funding package supported by Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) and Representative Doris Matsui (CA-06).

Join the Citizens’ Academy!
Applications are now being accepted for the Police Department’s Citizens’ Academy. This is a free ten-week program sharing the various aspects of policing. The program covers everything from patrol and investigations, to K9, vehicle operations, the mobile crisis support team, and more! The Citizens’ Academy meets on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Elk Grove Police Department. Classes begin on January 24th. The deadline to apply is Saturday, January 14Apply Now


Do You Have What It Takes to Play for Republic FC?
Republic FC will host the first open tryout Saturday and Sunday, January 14 and 15 at Bartholomew Sports Park (10150 Franklin High Road) for potential players age 18 and older. Participants will have the opportunity to be evaluated by Republic FC staff in the hopes of signing a professional contract with the club. At least one player in attendance will be invited to train with the team ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season with the chance to earn a professional contract. Learn more

Online Application Period to Open for City Grant Programs
The online application period for three City grant programs supporting local nonprofit organizations will open this Friday, January 13, for funding allocated in next fiscal year (FY 2023-24). Access the applications. 
A technical assistance webinar will be held on Tuesday, January 17 from 12:30 – 2:30 pm. City staff will provide an overview of the eligibility requirements and the application process and offer technical assistance to prospective applicants. Register to attend.
