Update to earlier double fatal collision; carjacking suspect arrested

The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department and the CHP released more information on this morning’s collision that killed two women in South Sacramento.

According to authorities, a man tried to carjack a victim but the victim was able to fight him off. The suspect then was successful in stealing another car at knifepoint. The suspect then fled in the car and ran a red light striking a Nissan Leaf with the two women inside. The impact of the collision killed the two women. A Sheriff’s Deputy was nearby and arrived on the scene and witnessed the suspect trying to flee the scene by attempting to carjack another person. The suspect was arrested.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released. The Sacramento Coroner will release the names of the two victims.

Update from the CHP

On January 19, 2023, at approximately 10:18 AM, California Highway Patrol (CHP) South Sacramento was notified by Sacramento Communications Center (SCC) of a traffic crash that occurred at the intersection of French Road at Florin Road. Upon arrival, it was determined that a silver Toyota SUV driven by 22 year old male from Sacramento, was traveling northbound on French Road, approaching a red traffic signal at the intersection of Florin Road. A gray Nissan sedan driven by a 49 year old female from Sacramento, along with a right front, 43 year old female passenger were traveling westbound on Florin Road, legally within the intersection of French Road/Florin Perkins Road.

The Toyota ran the red traffic signal and broadsided the Nissan. The Nissan was pushed in a northwesterly direction and collided with a white Ford van which was stopped, facing southbound within the #1 left turn lane of Florin Perkins Road at the intersection of Florin Road. Upon impact, both the driver and passenger of the Nissan suffered fatal injuries. Immediately following the traffic crash, the driver of the Toyota fled on foot and attempted to carjack a near by vehicle.

A Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy in the area on-viewed the traffic crash and was able to apprehend the male suspect, placing him into custody. It was later determined that the Toyota had recently been stolen by the male driver, after a carjacking at knife point, which occurred at approximately 10:00 AM. After further investigation, the driver of the Toyota was determined to be under the influence of a drug and placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI-. Following a medical clearance from a local hospital, the driver will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for charges of 191.5(a) VC – Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated, 23153(f) VC – Felony DUI-Drugs Causing Injury/Death and 20001(a) VC – Felony Hit and Run.
