CHP releases information on fatal pedestrian collision on Highway 99 near Elk Grove

The California Highway Patrol has released more information on a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and two vehicles that occurred Thursday night

On February, 2nd, 2023, at approximately 6:51 PM, Sacramento Communications Center broadcasted a report of a pedestrian struck by a black Honda on SR-99 southbound, south of Calvine Road, who was lying in the roadway. California Highway Patrol South Sacramento units responded and located the pedestrian laying in the #2 and #3 lanes with traumatic fatal injuries. It was subsequently determined that the pedestrian had likely crossed the northbound lanes from the east shoulder and was struck as he crossed into the southbound lanes by a 2016 Honda first, and then by a 2016 Chrysler. Both parties stopped on the right shoulder. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing, making him difficult to see in the darkness.

John Doe (unidentified at this time); approximately 60 years of age; appears to be a homeless Hispanic male adult. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will notify next of kin as soon as they make identification.

The #1 lane remained open for southbound traffic to pass through, and all other lanes remained closed for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The entire roadway was opened at 9:03 hours.
