Two men convicted of murder in fake drug robbery

Two men were convicted and could face life in prison without parole for a murder on December 7, 2021.

On March 17, 2023, Devonti Long and Tyrell Jarmon were convicted by a jury of the first-degree murder of Kevin Taylor, with a special circumstance that the murder was committed during the course of a robbery. Kishawn Johnson was convicted of attempted robbery, with an allegation of principal armed with a firearm. The jury also found true allegations that Devonti Long has a prior 2012 strike conviction for robbery and a prior 2015 and 2017 strike conviction for residential burglary.

The defendants set up a fake drug deal with the victim with a plan to rob the victim and raid his apartment for cash and narcotics.  The victim met Long and Jarmon at the gate of his apartment complex, thinking he was going to conduct a drug sale.  The victim was assaulted by Long and Jarmon while Kishawn Johnson hid behind a fence and watched.  The victim was then forced to walk back to his apartment. When they got near the door of the apartment, the victim turned to confront his attackers.  One of the defendants shot the victim in the abdomen before Long and Jarmon fled the scene.  The victim died at the scene.

Long and Jarmon face a maximum potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.  Sentencing is set for both defendants on June 2, 2023.  Johnson faces a maximum sentence of 4 years in prison and will be sentenced on April 28, 2023.  All three defendants will be sentenced in Department 40 before the Honorable Steve White.
