Pick Up a Free Refillable Propane Cylinder on Saturday
Californians use more than 4 million 1 lb. single-use propane cylinders for camping, cookouts, and other outdoor uses each year. Elk Grove’s Recycling & Waste Division will host an event this Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Special Waste Collection Center (9255 Disposal Lane) offering residents a chance to trade those disposables in for a new, refillable cylinder for free.* Reusable cylinders can be refilled more than 100 times and can last for more than a decade. To learn more about the ReFuel Your Fun Campaign, recycling empty cylinders, and where to find retailers offering reusables, visit refuelyourfun.org.
* Limit one per household, while supplies last.

Arbor Day is next Friday. How healthy are your trees?
If you’re wondering about the health of a tree, your first instinct might be to look up at the canopy. However, much of a tree’s health is determined by what happens underground. Healthy, well-developed roots are the anchors that allow trees to stand upright in the face of strong winds. They also help the tree absorb water and minerals, and they store nutrients that allow the tree to grow and defend against stresses. The Sacramento Tree Foundation provides details on the key elements that roots need to thrive. Read more.
