The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department released information that a man arrested by the Elk Grove Police Department on July 2 was found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased in the county jail on July 8.
Privacy PolicyOn Saturday, July 8, 2023, a 43-year-old male inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody on July 2, 2023, by the Elk Grove Police Department and booked for numerous felony charges, including kidnapping, domestic violence, and terrorist threats, amongst others. He was housed on 6-East in a detoxification cell with a cellmate.
At approximately 6 P.M., the inmate’s cellmate pressed the cell’s emergency button and alerted deputies that his cellmate did not appear to be breathing. Deputies and jail medical staff attempted life-saving measures until the Sacramento City Fire Department arrived, but the inmate was ultimately pronounced deceased by fire personnel.
Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and conducted an inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. Based on their preliminary investigation, detectives do not believe any foul play was involved. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
