What is happening in Elk Grove this week, July 17, 2023

Cooling Center Update
Elk Grove’s Cooling Center at the Wackford Complex opened on Friday, July 14 to assist community members lacking shelter or adequate home cooling during excessive heat weather. The center offered a respite from the heat for 19 people over the weekend. The cooling center will close after 8 p.m. today, Monday, July 17. Elk Grove Police Department and Cosumnes Fire Department emergency managers may reopen the cooling center later this week if excessive heat conditions remain in the extended forecast.

Cool Treats at Council Meet-up Event
Join Elk Grove’s Mayor, members of the City Council and city staff for a sweet meet-up event this Sunday, July 23 from 2-4 p.m. at the Old Town Plaza (9615 Railroad Street). This is the last week to apply for the Elk Grove Youth Commission. The City is looking for four enthusiastic students ages 13-18 (grades 7-12) to help advise the City Council and host unique experiences for local youth. This group offers a great way to serve the community, promote personal growth, and engage in local government. Apply by this Wednesday, July 19 to serve in the next school year. Learn more.

Invite the Cops to Your Party
National Night Out will be celebrated in Elk Grove and around the country on Tuesday, August 1. It may look like a lot of potlucks and ice cream socials, but National Night Out events bring neighbors and first responders together to help build a safer community. Each year, Elk Grove police officers, city officials, and hundreds of residents attend National Night Out events throughout the city. Neighborhoods hosting celebrations are encouraged to register their National Night Out event with the Police Department. Register your party online.

Show us Your Colorful Side at District56
Let’s Paint at The Preserve on Friday, July 21, from 11 am-2 pm. We’ll supply everything you need to paint rocks to place along The Preserve’s pathways at District56. Show us your skills and share them with everyone. Open to all ages and free to attend.

Making Battery Disposal Easy
Did you know that improper disposal of batteries can cause fires and leach toxic chemicals into the soil and water table, and is even considered a crime in California? There are plenty of reasons you should not throw away batteries in your garbage, especially since Elk Grove makes it so easy to properly dispose of them. Here’s how: Place non-rechargeable batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and DD) inside a clear resealable plastic bag. Place the bag on top of your recycling cart’s lid during your regular recycle day. Republic Services will pick up your batteries FREE of charge, no appointment necessary.
All other types of batteries can be taken to the Special Waste Collection Center for recycling. The facility is open Sunday through Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Be a Part of the Multicultural Festival
Want to sell your products or promote your business to thousands of festival attendees? The City’s events team is currently accepting applications for vendors and sponsors for the Elk Grove Multicultural Festival on September 9 at District56. Connect with the community and align your business with Elk Grove’s premier cultural celebration. Some restrictions apply. Learn more and apply here.
