The center offered a respite from the heat for 19 people over the weekend. The cooling center will close after 8 p.m. today, Monday, July 17. Elk Grove Police Department and Cosumnes Fire Department emergency managers may reopen the cooling center later this week if excessive heat conditions remain in the extended forecast. |

It may look like a lot of potlucks and ice cream socials, but National Night Out events bring neighbors and first responders together to help build a safer community. Each year, Elk Grove police officers, city officials, and hundreds of residents attend National Night Out events throughout the city. ![]() Making Battery Disposal Easy Did you know that improper disposal of batteries can cause fires and leach toxic chemicals into the soil and water table, and is even considered a crime in California? There are plenty of reasons you should not throw away batteries in your garbage, especially since Elk Grove makes it so easy to properly dispose of them. Here’s how: Place non-rechargeable batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and DD) inside a clear resealable plastic bag. Place the bag on top of your recycling cart’s lid during your regular recycle day. Republic Services will pick up your batteries FREE of charge, no appointment necessary. All other types of batteries can be taken to the Special Waste Collection Center for recycling. The facility is open Sunday through Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
