![]() What happens to your organic waste? Elk Grove’s organic waste is hauled to one of several organics processing facilities where it is transformed into nutrient-rich compost. Used in agriculture, landscaping, and home gardens, this compost helps revitalize the land, retains water, and helps native plants thrive. City staff recently toured the Elder Creek Transfer Station to observe the work of the “Mega Thor” pre-processor. The “Mega Thor” machinery is a system of hammers that pound the organic material into an oatmeal-like consistency before it is transported to an anaerobic digester. The Mega Thor separates out contamination such as plastic bags from the organic slurry and channels those materials out separately to be disposed of as garbage. Converting problematic food waste into useful products is one way that Elk Grove is meeting the SB 1383 mandate in a productive way. Did you Know? Elk Grove is required to recover .08 tons of organic waste per resident per year to meet the requirements of State’s organics recycling law. |
