After 3 hours of contentious debate over the Oak Rose apartment project that resulted in no decision, the city council voted to approve a separate temporary winter shelter at the former Rite Aid store on the corner of Elk Grove Blvd and Waterman Road.
The project was praised by community members who work with the homeless and the city council. Elk Grove Police Chief Bobby Davis detailed the enhanced security for the project and the area to ensure the safety of the public and those using the shelter.
The city is contracting with the Gathering Inn to operate the shelter from November 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Construction on the new Elk Grove Library will begin in 2024.
A few residents expressed concern for public safety in the area. The city council unanimously approved the project 5-0.
The city’s website has more information on the project and answers to some questions.
