Learn More About the Enhanced Winter Sanctuary
Providing Elk Grove’s unhoused individuals with a warm space to stay and wrap-around services over the cold, winter months is the goal of the new Enhanced Winter Sanctuary. Scheduled to open November 1 and operate through March 31, 2024, the City and The Gathering Inn are inviting the community to attend these upcoming meetings to learn more about the people, program, and services being offered at this temporary facility.

Badges vs Axes is a Game Changer for Special Olympics
The Elk Grove Police Department will take on the Cosumnes Fire Department in an inaugural Badges vs Axes charity basketball game this Saturday, October 14 at 6 p.m. in Elk Grove High School’s Cartwright Gym.
Bragging rights are on the line for the players while the crowd in attendance will get cool stuff like Sacramento Kings swag and other prizes. All funds raised benefit the Specials Olympics. Adult admission is $10 and kids ages 5-12 are $5. Get your tickets now.
Gain a Loyal, Furever Friend for Free Through October 15
Elk Grove Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for all shelter animals through Sunday October 15 as part of Adoptober Fest!
The animal shelter currently has over 90 adoptable cats/kittens, nearly 40 adoptable dogs, and an adoptable rabbit, with more animals becoming available every day.
Adopt a shelter pet and gain a new furever grateful member of the family. The Elk Grove Animal Shelter is located at 9150 Union Park Way. Operating hours are noon to 6 pm Tuesday through Sunday. Lighting Up the Night for Cancer Awareness
October 13 is National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. District56 will join the #LightUpMBC global campaign by illuminating the facility’s Cloud Fountain sculpture in the MBC awareness color of teal to shine a light on Metastatic Breast Cancer, also known as Stage 4.
The community is invited to tune in to #LightUpMBC Live, a virtual benefit, on Friday, October 13 at 5:30 p.m. PT on LiveOne, YouTube + Facebook Live @METAvivor and metavivor.org. #LightUpMBC Live will feature inspiring patient stories told from illuminated landmarks around the country, celebrity guests and musical performances to raise funds for MBC research. Bring on the Bands!
High school marching bands from throughout northern California will converge on Elk Grove streets and school sites this Saturday, October 14 to compete in the Franklin High School Invitational Band Review. To accommodate the event, road closures and alternative routes around the event will be in place between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly.
The Franklin High School Invitational Band Review is the primary fundraising event for the Franklin High School band program. The City of Elk Grove is among the major event sponsors.
Keeping Riders Safe and Smart. Free Bicycle Education Class
The City and the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) have teamed up to offer a Bicycle Education Class for all ages at the Old Town Plaza on Saturday, October 21, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Learn bike control skills and some street riding rules and techniques from LCI certified instructor, Pierson Rohr. This class is free and accessible for all ages and useful for all skill levels. Class space is limited. Bring a working bike and a helmet.
Home Sweet Rental Home: Virtual Seminar Offers Insight on Managing Your Rental
The laws and regulations regarding rental properties are complex and evolving. The City is hosting a Virtual Rental Housing Seminar on Wednesday, October 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to inform landlords, property managers, and other interested parties about the rights and responsibilities of renters and landlords in Elk Grove.
Hear from subject matter experts, including representatives from the City’s Code Enforcement Division (rental housing registration requirements), the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (Housing Choice Voucher), and Project Sentinel (fair housing and discrimination). The session will cover the following topics:
Rights and responsibilities of rental property owners, managers, and tenantsFair housing and discriminationHousing Choice voucher programUpdates of city ordinances for rental and vacant properties and common violations
Attending this virtual seminar allows property owners to extend the registration of their rental property with the City from three years to an indefinite period of time that only ends when the registration information becomes invalid or the property changes ownership.
