Celebrating Building Safety
Elk Grove joins communities across the globe in celebrating International Building Safety Day this Thursday, May 22, recognizing the essential role building safety professionals play in keeping our homes, workplaces, and public spaces secure. These professionals ensure that construction in Elk Grove meets modern standards for safety, sustainability, and resilience—helping protect our families, our investments, and our community. From reviewing plans and issuing permits to conducting on-site inspections, building officials are on the front lines of public safety. Their work ensures that everything from your child’s school to your favorite local restaurant is built to last and safe to occupy. As Elk Grove continues to grow, the need for safe, sustainable development has never been greater. Building Safety Month reminds us that well-enforced, modern codes are essential tools in reducing risk and ensuring our community remains a great place to live and work. Please join us in thanking the dedicated professionals who help make Elk Grove safe—today and every day. Learn more.

More Flashing Yellow Arrows are on the way!
You’ve seen them around Elk Grove—now we’re adding even more Flashing Yellow Left Turn Arrows. Locations like Elk Grove-Florin Road & Valley Oak Lane and E. Stockton Blvd. at Marketplace 99. They’ll be activated this spring and summer.
When you see a flashing yellow arrow, you can turn left, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic, bikes, and pedestrians. It’s about keeping traffic moving while staying safe. Find the new locations and tips on how to navigate the Flashing Yellow Arrows.

Despite Declining Statewide Conditions, Elk Grove Maintains the Best Roads in the Region
Data released from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration’s 2023 Highway Statistics Series reported that California has some of the worst road conditions in the country. View a recent article published in the Elk Grove Citizen But thanks to our Public Works Department, Elk Grove has among the best in the region.
Public Works maintains nearly 1,175 lane miles of roadway with over 90 million square feet of pavement. The Pavement Condition Index (PCI) used to classify roads based on their condition rates all streets from 0 to 100 (poor to excellent condition), depending on severity of pavement distress. Elk Grove’s PCI average is 80, which is considered very good — the highest in the region.
Elk Grove’s “Fix-it-First” approach of performing mostly preventive maintenance has been proven to extend the life of pavements effectively and is less costly than reconstruction. The Public Works team earned the Overall Winner in the 2025 Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards, presented by the League of California Cities (Cal Cities), County Engineers Association of California (CEAC), and California State Association of Counties (CSAC) earlier this year.
