Top Stories in the USA — October 3, 2026

WASHINGTON — Americans are waking up Saturday to major developments involving the economy, Medicare, U.S. military operations in the Middle East, the Supreme Court and a search for a missing aircraft.

Medicare recipients to receive one-time $90 payment

President Donald Trump announced that the federal government will send a one-time $90 payment to more than 20 million Americans enrolled in Medicare to help offset monthly medical insurance premiums.

The White House says the money will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund. Most eligible recipients are expected to receive the payment through direct deposit in early October, while others will receive checks by mail.

The announcement comes one month before the November 3 midterm elections, when control of Congress will be decided.

U.S. military increases presence in Middle East

Tensions with Iran remain a major international concern. The U.S. is moving roughly 9,000 additional sailors and Marines aboard ships to the Middle East, a deployment that could put three American aircraft carriers in the region.

The military buildup comes as the Trump administration considers its next steps in the conflict with Iran. Senior national security officials also met at Camp David on Friday to discuss Iran and the conflict involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen, according to Axios.

Hiring slows as unemployment rises

The latest employment numbers are adding to concerns about the strength of the U.S. labor market. Employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, while the unemployment rate increased to 4.2%.

Despite the weaker hiring numbers, Wall Street finished Friday higher. The S&P 500 gained 0.7%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%, and the Nasdaq climbed 1.2%. Investors interpreted the weaker jobs report as potentially reducing pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates again soon.

Economic concerns are also hitting some communities particularly hard. Nearly 1,400 workers were laid off this week at the former Navistar truck factory in Springfield, Ohio, a loss large enough to erase roughly a year’s worth of job growth in the greater Dayton area.

Supreme Court prepares for major new term

The U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term Monday with several consequential disputes ahead.

Among them is a major climate case involving Boulder County, Colorado, and oil companies Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil. Boulder is seeking damages over costs associated with climate-related disasters, while the companies argue that states should not be allowed to use lawsuits to regulate an issue with national and global implications.

The outcome could affect similar climate lawsuits around the country.

The court will also confront additional cases involving the scope of presidential power and Trump administration policies, including immigration-related disputes.

Coast Guard searches for missing private jet

A search is underway after a private jet traveling from Bermuda to Boston disappeared with six people aboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers approximately 45 minutes after leaving Bermuda. Search efforts are underway as authorities try to determine what happened to the aircraft.

The day ahead

The economy and the conflict with Iran are likely to remain among the biggest national stories heading into the weekend. With the November midterm elections now just one month away, economic conditions, healthcare costs and foreign policy are also becoming increasingly prominent in the national political debate.
